WINTER WEDDINGS
at The Canary Shed

Candlelight, fairy lights, rich seasonal styling, and hundreds of colourful wooden birds hanging overhead catching the light. A room that does a great deal of the work for you before you have hung a single decoration.

Home > Winter Weddings

There is something particular about a winter wedding here. As the countryside around Burnham-on-Crouch settles into its quieter months, the barn becomes a warm, welcoming retreat - the sort of place you want to bring everyone you love into and shut the door behind you.

Our ceremony space is heated and fully enclosed, so the weather stops deciding anything. Say your vows inside, celebrate in the barn, and step out into the frosted courtyard for photographs before coming back into the warmth.

And because your booking runs across three days rather than one, nobody has to leave. Up to 30 guests stay in the accommodation, everyone eats together the night before, and there is a whole Sunday afterwards - the spa, the hot tub, a walk along the River Crouch, breakfast at the Parlour Café - before a 3pm check-out. A winter wedding at The Canary Shed does not end when the music stops.

The weather stops deciding anything

Our ceremony space is heated and fully enclosed, so your day runs exactly as planned whatever December throws at it.

A barn at its best after dark

Candlelight, fairy lights and hundreds of wooden birds overhead - and in winter the evening starts at four o'clock, so you get hours longer in it than a summer couple ever will.

Three days, and nobody leaves

Up to 30 guests stay on site, everyone eats together the night before, and check-out isn't until 3pm on the Sunday.

Why winter works here

The season most couples discount first

Summer asks a barn to compete with the outdoors. Winter asks it to be the whole world for a day, and the Canary Shed is well set up for that: soaring ceilings and exposed beams, warm timber, and lighting that turns the room golden from the middle of the afternoon onwards. In December, the evening effectively starts at four o'clock, which means you get to enjoy the barn at its best for hours longer than a July couple ever will.

Outside, the farm takes on a quiet beauty. Crisp air, bare trees, low winter sun and the chance of frost across the fields - which photographs beautifully, and gives your photographer something genuinely different to work with.

Winter is also our most available season, and often the best value. If you have flexibility on dates, it is worth asking what we have.

DAY one

Friday

Arrive from midday and make the barn yours. Winter is the season where the decorating day earns its keep - there is a lot of candle and light work to place, and it is far more enjoyable done unhurried with a drink in hand than squeezed into a wedding morning.

Overnight guests check into the barns from 4pm. Through December, the luxury barns are dressed with Christmas trees, so your guests arrive to the festive version of the site as well as the wedding.

Eat together that evening - a relaxed supper in the accommodation, or something more organised if you would rather. It is often the part of the weekend couples say they remember most fondly.

DAY TWO

The wedding

Ceremony in the ceremony space, warm and enclosed, seating up to 120. Drinks and something hot on arrival, then the wedding breakfast as the light goes and the barn comes into its own.

Music runs until 11pm, and the fire pit outside gives anyone who wants the cold air somewhere to gather with a toasted marshmallow.

A rustic wooden table is set with white plates, colourful candles, glasses, and vibrant floral centrepieces of pink and red flowers, illustrating how it works to create a warm gathering space against a chevron-patterned wooden wall. | The Canary Shed
Day three

Sunday

The slowest morning of the year. The gym, spa and hot tub are free for overnight guests, breakfast is at the Parlour Café on site, and check-out is not until 3pm. Nobody is packing a car at nine in the morning.

Winter Styling

Rich, elegant, and led by the timber

Deep greens, warm browns, burgundy, forest tones and touches of gold all work beautifully. Lush foliage, dried greenery, eucalyptus, pine and berries paired with rustic wooden logs, lanterns and a generous quantity of candles - genuinely more than you think you need, because candlelight is the single biggest thing you can do for a winter barn.

Texture does the rest. Velvet table runners, heavier linens and soft blankets add warmth to the room and give guests something to reach for as the evening goes on.

Because the barn is a blank canvas with plenty of personality already, you can go either way: understated rustic elegance, or full festive glamour. If you are marrying in December, the Christmas trees in the accommodation give the weekend a seasonal thread without you having to arrange a thing.

Planning a winter wedding

A few things worth building into your plans

Work backwards from the light

Sunset is around four o'clock in December. Get your couple portraits and any group shots done early, and talk timings through with your photographer well in advance. Once the light has gone, the barn takes over - and it photographs beautifully after dark.

The fire pit gives people a reason to go outside

Toasted marshmallows, blankets, and a corner of the evening that isn't the dancefloor.

Think about the ground

Frost and winter rain both make the lawn soft. Mentioning heel protectors to guests in advance is a small thing that saves a lot of grief.

A warm drinks station is the best money you will spend

Mulled wine, hot chocolate, and a bottle of Baileys next to it. It gives guests something to do with their hands on arrival and sets the tone immediately.

Blankets and a basket by the door

Not needed indoors, but a nice touch for anyone stepping out.

Wedding Day Emergency Kit

A small box of winter essentials, tucked somewhere accessible, saves a lot of small problems on the day.

  • Hand warmers - for anyone stepping outside for photographs
  • Clear umbrellas - they keep faces visible in pictures, which coloured ones do not
  • Lip balm and moisturiser - cold air is unkind to both
  • Tissues - cold weather makes noses run
  • Spare tights or socks - the most requested item of the day, every time
  • Heel protectors - for soft, frosty or snowy ground

What couples say

Don't just take our word for it!

“Our wedding was out of this world, The Canary Shed is an absolutely stunning venue and we wish we could do it all over again. The staff were so lovely and went out of their way to be incredibly helpful. We loved that our wedding celebrations could be spread out over a weekend and loved that we could have family and friends stay in the accommodation along side us. Everything was dog friendly which was extra bonus points for us as we had all 3 family pets at our wedding which made it extra special.”

Emma & Matty · October 2022

“What a stunning, laid back and quirky venue. We had been engaged for 7yrs before finally booking our wedding and The Canary Shed was the first and only venue we looked at. It ticked so many boxes for us so we went for it and it was the right decision. From the moment we booked to the time we checked out (the day after the wedding) it was LAID BACK and FUN!”

Winter FAQs

We are a fully dog-friendly wedding venue - and not only is the venue dog-friendly, the self-catering accommodation is too! Your four-legged family members are every bit as welcome as the two-legged ones, so your best friend can be right by your side from the morning prep to the first dance.

We can accommodate up to 120 wedding guests for both the day and the evening. Our on-site accommodation can host up to 30 overnight guests, so your nearest and dearest can stay and celebrate the whole weekend with you.

We are pleased to say that we are licensed for legal ceremonies! Our stunning ceremony space offers the perfect blend of indoor comfort and outdoor charm, making it a truly versatile setting for your special day. Designed to be enjoyed year-round, it features bi-fold doors that can be fully opened, creating a beautiful open-air atmosphere and connecting you to nature.

When enclosed, the space stays warm and intimate - a cosy, elegant backdrop whatever the season. Whether you picture a sun-drenched summer ceremony or a romantic winter wedding sheltered from the elements, the space adapts, with seating for up to 120 guests.

Yes - and it's what makes a Canary Shed wedding so special. Rather than squeezing everything into a single day, you have the venue from 12pm on your check-in day to decorate and settle in, accommodation from 4pm, and you're not turfed out at dawn either: the barns and accommodation are yours until 3pm the day after your wedding. Decorate together, share a big meal the night before, get ready in the morning at your own pace, then party like there's no tomorrow.

Here at The Canary Shed we like to make planning as fun and as stress-free as possible - which is why we include a wedding coordination service within our package.

Our in-house coordinator will be in attendance on the day, making sure everything is in order, nothing is forgotten, and that you and your guests are free to simply enjoy yourselves.

Come and see it

Ideally on a dark afternoon, when the barn is at its most persuasive

Winter dates are the most available of the year and often the best value. If a cosy, candlelit barn wedding is what you have in mind, come and see it.

Jade and Paige were absolutely amazing. The Canary shed was the first venue we found online and after viewing a few others they just stood out above everyone else. Throughout the whole process they were so incredibly helpful and made sure everything fit within our budget and weren't just trying to sell us additional bits. They also made sure the day was how we wanted it to be rather than fitting into what is expected of a wedding. On the day, everything went absolutely seamlessly and they worked so hard to keep it all on track. We didn't need to lift a finger, they sorted everything. They were so friendly and so much fun to go through the process with. Jade was always available and quick to answer or sort anything we needed. Everything about the venue was perfect and we are still getting compliments on it. We can't thank Jade, Paige and the Canary shed enough for an absolute dream of a wedding. It would not have been possible without them. Without doubt, 5 star venue.

We made the best decision in getting married here!! The venue initially caught our eye because of the options to have whatever catering etc you want, the colourfulness and fun vibe it gives and it being dog friendly. We wanted our wedding to feel in some ways just like a big garden party and on a sunny day, this venue really delivered! It was such a big plus being able to stay onsite all weekend and we actually loved doing some setting up with our pals on the Friday and seeing our vision come to life. Jade and Paige were so helpful in the build up and were amazing on the day at checking in and just making sure everything ran so smoothly. If you’re considering getting married at the Canary Shed- go ahead and book!! You won’t regret it!

We had an amazing wedding here- Jade and the team are great and the venue is so colourful and beautiful and chill. It worked really well to stay on site with the family beforehand - it was very child and dog friendly, with lots of places for babies to sleep during the wedding too :) I would highly recommend.

We can’t get over how amazing our wedding was at the canary shed. Jade, Paige and the rest of the team can’t do more for you but at the same time so relaxed. They made the wedding planning process so easy. And during the wedding they were one step ahead of everything we needed. All our guests loved it and kept saying how a beautiful and unique the venue was. We loved how easy it is to make your day personal to what you want. So happy we choose the canary shed as you can celebrate all weekend not just one day which makes it more special. The lodges are beautifully decorated and all our guests had an amazing weekend. Couldn’t recommend the canary shed enough!
