The Canary Shed is an exclusive-hire wedding venue with on-site accommodation, set on a working farm near Burnham-on-Crouch on the Essex coast - about an hour from London, and yours alone from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Most weddings are over almost before they've started. Months of planning compress into a few hours, and by the time you've spoken to everyone, the day has gone. Booked as a weekend, it doesn't work like that. There's no rush to set up in the morning, no hard stop at the end of the night, and no convoy of taxis home while the party's still going. Instead you get two nights and three days with the people you most want around you, in a place that's yours and no one else's for the duration.
It's a different way of doing things, and it's the reason most couples choose us. Here's how the weekend runs.
Arrive from midday to dress the venue however you like. Some couples bring in a stylist or a florist; others do it themselves with a car full of bits and a willing crew. Either way, the time is yours, and there's no one waiting to lock up behind you.
Overnight guests can check into the barns from 4pm, so by the evening your closest people are already on site and settled.
It's a good chance for both sides of the party to meet properly before the day itself, over a drink or a relaxed meal together, which tends to take the edge off the morning for everyone.
The day itself, with room for up to 120 guests - seated together for both the ceremony and the meal, so no one's moved on or left out. Because everyone's already here, there's no getting-ready scramble across three postcodes and no one arriving flustered.
The ceremony space is licensed in its own right, and you can hold the ceremony two ways. With the bi-fold doors closed, you're married within the space itself, everyone gathered inside. With the bi-folds open, you say your vows under the ceremony pergola, with the space opening out around you. It comes down to the day and the weather - and either way there's cover to hand, which in this country is worth having.
From there the day is yours to run as you please: eat, drink, and carry on into the evening with a staffed bar and no closing time imposed from outside. The farm setting means there's room to breathe, indoors and out, whatever the season.
Laze around the next morning. Chill in the spa, nurse your hangovers, revel in the memories of the night and bask in the glow of actually being married! Check out isn’t until 3pm!
Make a weekend of your wedding… because why wouldn’t you?
