Planning a wedding at The Canary Shed, our exclusive-hire barn wedding venue in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex? We've gathered the questions couples ask us most - from our whole-weekend celebrations and dog-friendly policy to catering, décor and everything in between.
Have a read through, and if there's anything we haven't covered, just email weddings@thecanaryshed.co.uk and a member of the team will be happy to help.
If you're weighing up whether The Canary Shed is the right Essex wedding venue for you, start here. These are the things couples most want to know before they book a viewing - what makes us different, who we can host, and how we take the stress out of your day.
We are a fully dog-friendly wedding venue - and not only is the venue dog-friendly, the self-catering accommodation is too! Your four-legged family members are every bit as welcome as the two-legged ones, so your best friend can be right by your side from the morning prep to the first dance.
We can accommodate up to 120 wedding guests for both the day and the evening. Our on-site accommodation can host up to 30 overnight guests, so your nearest and dearest can stay and celebrate the whole weekend with you.
We are pleased to say that we are licensed for legal ceremonies! Our stunning ceremony space offers the perfect blend of indoor comfort and outdoor charm, making it a truly versatile setting for your special day. Designed to be enjoyed year-round, it features bi-fold doors that can be fully opened, creating a beautiful open-air atmosphere and connecting you to nature.
When enclosed, the space stays warm and intimate - a cosy, elegant backdrop whatever the season. Whether you picture a sun-drenched summer ceremony or a romantic winter wedding sheltered from the elements, the space adapts, with seating for up to 120 guests.
Yes - and it's what makes a Canary Shed wedding so special. Rather than squeezing everything into a single day, you have the venue from 12pm on your check-in day to decorate and settle in, accommodation from 4pm, and you're not turfed out at dawn either: the barns and accommodation are yours until 3pm the day after your wedding. Decorate together, share a big meal the night before, get ready in the morning at your own pace, then party like there's no tomorrow.
Here at The Canary Shed we like to make planning as fun and as stress-free as possible - which is why we include a wedding coordination service within our package.
Our in-house coordinator will be in attendance on the day, making sure everything is in order, nothing is forgotten, and that you and your guests are free to simply enjoy yourselves.
One of the joys of an exclusive-hire venue is that the place is entirely yours. Here's how access works across your stay, from the moment you arrive to set up to your relaxed check-out the morning after.
You'll have exclusive access to the venue from 12pm on your check-in day (Tuesday or Friday), with access to your accommodation from 4pm - plenty of time to decorate and make the space your own before your guests arrive.
You can start as early as you like! Celebrations wind up at 11.30pm, with any guests not staying on-site heading off by midnight.
No early-morning rush - you have the barns and accommodation until 3pm the following day. Suppliers can also clear down beyond midnight on the day itself if needed; just confirm this with the site team in advance.
You'll have exclusive use of the accommodation, the main barn and the outdoor ceremony spaces, and your overnight guests can enjoy the on-site gym and spa. There's a café on-site that stays open to the public from 9am–5pm, but its entrance is on the far side of the building, so there's little footfall near the barns.
Absolutely - with accommodation on-site, you can each take your pick of a barn to get ready in. That means your own dedicated space to relax with your wedding party and ease into the morning at your own pace.
There's ample free off-street parking on-site, with signs directing guests on arrival. Cars can be left overnight (at owners' risk) and collected by 3pm the next day.
As a rural venue we do have some uneven ground and lips at the entrances, but we'll always do our utmost to help. Do chat to the team in advance so we can make sure all of your guests feel looked after.
From saying "I do" to your last song of the night, here's how the day itself comes together — the ceremony space, the music, and how we turn the barn from daytime dining to evening dance floor.
In our versatile licensed ceremony space, which blends indoor comfort with outdoor charm - bi-fold doors open it up to the courtyard in warmer months, or close for a cosy, sheltered setting in winter. It seats up to 120 guests.
Yes - all music must be turned off by 11.30pm. But we don't have any restriction over what you play, so don't be shy of playing some YMCA and Wham!
We take care of that for you. While you and your guests enjoy cocktail hour at the outside bar, our team transitions the room from day to evening, clearing space for your dance floor.
We have a PA system that's perfect for background music throughout the day until your band or DJ arrives (connected via an aux lead) - your DJ or band will bring their own PA for their set.
There's no need for a generator; we have ample power for music and lighting, though your caterer should contact us to discuss their power needs.
Not at all - your day runs the way you want it to. You'll confirm your final timeline with your coordinator at your planning meeting.
Top Tip - If you're having a licensed ceremony on-site, we recommend booking your ceremony time with Essex County Council first, then building the day around it.
We give you real freedom over how you feed and water your guests — from elegant sit-down feasts to relaxed street food, plus a fully stocked bar and the option of a signature cocktail or two.
We don't cater in-house, but we have a wonderful catering partner, Feast Company, our sole caterers for sit-down meals. They offer everything from flavourful feasting boards and flame-grilled BBQs to elegant three-course wedding breakfasts, hog roasts, gourmet sliders and dessert bars.
Prefer something more relaxed? You're welcome to bring in a self-sufficient street food-style caterer operating from their own food truck or gazebo setup - just speak to us first so we can check we're able to meet their requirements.
Yes! Food trucks can set up in the café courtyard between the café and the barn, or by the firepit so your guests can enjoy the views out over the fields.
We work closely with local suppliers and are confident our bar offers an extensive, delicious range, so we don't offer corkage - all drinks are ordered through us in advance (see our price list for details).
Got a specific request? Just ask the events team.
Yes - we love a personalised cocktail!
Whether it's a welcome drink, post-ceremony tipple or a signature serve for the evening, chat to the team and we'll make it happen (additional charges may apply).
The bar runs from 11.30am to 11.30pm. We're a cashless bar accepting card only, with prepay options available - worth letting guests know, as the nearest cashpoint is a five-minute drive away.
This is your day, your way — and our blank-canvas barn is made to be transformed. Here's what you can bring and how to make the space unmistakably yours, from candlelight to confetti.
Yes - tealights and pillar candles are welcome in votives, jars or hurricane vases that sit higher than the flame, with tables protected by a runner or cover. We don't permit candlesticks, and a refundable £150 candle deposit applies in case of any damage to the tables.
Yes to all, outdoors! We ask for biodegradable confetti such as real petals, and smoke bombs and sparklers are very welcome in the outdoor spaces for those scroll-stopping photos.
Helium balloons are fine - just fix them to weights so they don't float up with the canaries!
Fireworks aren't permitted, but we have a gas firepit available on the day, and smoke bombs and sparklers make a great alternative.
You're welcome to use the wall hooks provided and drawing pins for lighter items on the wooden panels. Nothing can be suspended from the ceiling, though - we have a few feathered friends up there!
Suspended ceiling lights and fixed wall lights create a lovely evening ambience. If you'd like extra, it's worth checking first whether your DJ or band brings their own.
Yes - eight handmade trestle tables seating 12 each, a top table seating 16 (which can be split), and up to 120 folding wooden chairs. We can provide water tumblers, champagne flutes and wine glasses.
Our tables look great exposed, but you're welcome to bring your own linen, and crockery, cutlery and napkins come via your caterer.
Décor setup is managed by you, but you're very welcome to hire a stylist to provide a setup and décor service if you'd prefer a hands-off morning.
Some outdoor areas are sheltered by large wooden gazebos. You're welcome to hire in patio heaters for the colder months — or a basket of cosy blankets is a lovely, thoughtful touch.
We believe in creative freedom, which means no restrictive supplier lists - bring the people who'll bring your vision to life. Here's how suppliers work, and who'll be looking after you.
Not at all. We're proud of our network and recommend each supplier purely on reputation (we don't take commission), but you're free to bring in whomever you choose.
We do ask that any supplier working on-site holds their own public liability insurance and provides us a copy ahead of the day.
When you arrive, a member of the events team will check you in and show you around, and you'll have a direct line to a team member throughout your stay.
We provide enough staff to run the bar and manage the transition from your meal into the evening. Service during your wedding breakfast is usually handled by your caterer - most include it, but if yours doesn't, you'll need to arrange serving staff separately.
We'd advise offering soft drinks throughout the day to keep them looked after, and many couples put a set amount behind the bar for suppliers (anything unused is refunded). Whether they need a meal is best confirmed with each supplier directly.
Part of what makes a Canary Shed wedding feel like a mini-holiday is having everyone stay onsite. Here's what to know about the accommodation and the little practical touches for your guests.
Our boutique self-catering accommodation sleeps up to 30 guests, just a short stroll from the main barn - and overnight guests also have access to the on-site gym and spa.
Yes - there's a large coat rail in the hallway near the restrooms. For wedding gifts, we'd recommend designating a room in your accommodation, as we can't take responsibility for personal items.
There are three toilets for your exclusive use, and your accommodation can double as a quiet space for any guests who need it - just let the team know in advance.
Yes - your handover pack includes lists of both.
As we're rurally located (and Uber hasn't reached Burnham just yet!), we strongly recommend guests pre-book taxis, as availability on the night is very limited.
The bits that aren't glamorous but are good to know - how booking works, what's included, and how we hand everything back to you the morning after.
A 25% deposit of your total venue fee secures your weekend, with a further 50% due 12 weeks before your stay and the balance approximately three weeks before your wedding. Accommodation is paid in full eight weeks prior.
We aim to be fully transparent - there are no hidden fees for anything in your contract. Alcohol, soft drinks and personalised cocktails are charged on top of your hire (bar staff and equipment are included), and a pre-authorised security/damages deposit is held on arrival and released after a check-out inventory, usually within a few working days.
Yes - your package includes two further scheduled visits (we suggest one around six months before and one about four weeks before), and you're welcome to pop along to our open days throughout the year too.
Yes - standard Canary Shed signage on the day, advance directions if needed, and personalised chalkboards with your names to guide guests in from the main road. You're welcome to bring your own signage too (collected the day after).
No deep cleaning needed - we want you relaxing the morning after!
We just ask that décor is collected by 3pm, rubbish is bagged and taken to the bins, and any indoor confetti is swept up. We'll handle the rest.
